Know Exactly Where the Lines Are

Hydro excavation uses pressurized water to loosen soil and a powerful vacuum to lift it into a debris tank. Gas, water, fiber, and electric lines that a backhoe bucket could crack are exposed without damage, and the hole is only as big as it needs to be.

It’s the safer choice around existing utilities, in tight spaces, and anywhere a strike would be expensive or dangerous. The most common use is potholing: confirming the exact location and depth of a marked utility before directional boring or trenching begins.

Pressurized water

Breaks up soil without cutting into pipes or cable.

Vacuum removal

Soil is lifted into a debris tank instead of piled beside the hole.

Visual confirmation

You see the line, its depth, and its condition before you dig.

WHAT WE HANDLE

Hydro Excavation Services

Potholing & Utility Verification

Small test holes that confirm the exact location and depth of marked utilities before boring or trenching.

Line & Valve Exposure

Buried lines, valves, and connections exposed for repair, inspection, or tie-ins.

Slot Trenching

Narrow, precise trenches for laying new lines with minimal surface disturbance.

Digging in Tight Spaces

Excavation near foundations, in congested utility corridors, and where equipment can’t fit.

HOW IT WORKS

How Potholing Works

Locates First

811 marks the lines so we know where to start.

Water Loosens Soil

Pressurized water breaks the soil up around the line.

Vacuum Lifts It Out

Soil goes into the debris tank, leaving a clean hole.

Verify & Backfill

The line is confirmed, recorded, and the hole backfilled as needed.

FAQ

Common Questions

What is potholing?

Potholing is digging a small test hole to visually confirm the exact location and depth of an underground utility before excavation or directional boring.

Mechanical digging near buried utilities risks striking a line, which can cause outages, costly repairs, and serious injuries. Hydro excavation removes soil without cutting into the line.

Yes. Utility locates come first. Hydro excavation is how you confirm exactly where those marked lines are before you dig.

The soil, called spoils, is held in the truck’s debris tank and either hauled off or used for backfill, depending on the job.
